well, maybe first we can talk about the weather,lol;then according to the contexts you are in, try to find some common topic that might interest your partner and meanwhile you can have the same feeling. And if you meet each other for the first time, maybe you should make this conversion too long, try to stop before you two getting involved in the deeper and more private topics. that is a good idea. but sometimes i will find it difficult to say what i want to express. when a topic is over, it is hard to break the silent.

Just be yourself and try to talk about things of interest to you. Making a new friend will generate many topics to talk about. If the person you are speaking to does not speak Chinese, they will be so thrilled that you are trying/speaking English, so you should definitely not feel uncomfortable or shy! No one is judging you in that case, only very grateful!
