Asking for permission
Could I borrow your library card tomorrow?
Would it be alright if I copied your lecture notes?
Would you mind if I borrowed your car for the weekend?
Can we bring additional guests to the graduation ceremony?
Do you have any objection to my posting your essay on the Internet?
I would like to request permission to reprint an excerpt from your article.
I hope you’ll allow me to accompany you on your trip.
Do I have your permission to speak with him about this issue?
I was wondering if my wife could also attend.
Please let me know if I have your permission.
I would really appreciate it.
Granting permission
I have no objections to that.
You may bring up to three guests to the event.
You can definitely borrow my car for the weekend.
You have my permission to publish the photographs on your website.
I’ll give you a one-week extension on the essay deadline.
Feel free to reprint my article for classroom use.
You can borrow my driver’s license, but I’ll need it back by Friday.
You’re welcome to use my laptop tomorrow.
That would be perfectly fine with me.
You have my permission.
Denying permission
I’m sorry, but I can’t change the rules.
I’m afraid that the meeting is mandatory for all employees.
The final project is mandatory for all students.
Unfortunately, you cannot be exempted from the examination.
I’m afraid I can’t lend you my car until you have a driver’s license.
For security reasons, we cannot give you access to that information.
Access to this website is restricted to members only.
We can’t disclose any information about this case until it is settled.
Since there is still so much unfinished work, I’m afraid I can’t give you the day off.
Because of the limited number of seats, you are not allowed to bring any guests.
It would be unfair to the other students to give you an extension.
There is a regulation prohibiting pets in this building.
I don’t have the authority to grant your request.
I’m afraid there are no exceptions.
e.g
Hi Mark,
It was great to see you and Alice on Saturday. Jen and I are celebrating our two-year anniversary next weekend, and we’re planning a trip to Sacramento. If you don’t mind, could we borrow your convertible from Friday to Sunday? If it’s not convenient, we can always rent a car. I just thought I’d ask.
Cheers,
Daniel
Dear Ms. Stewart,
With regards to your e-mail of May 8, I’m glad to grant you permission to use an excerpt from my article in your seminar and any related handouts. Your offer of compensation, although appreciated, is really unnecessary. Allow me to wish you the best of luck on your seminar.
Your sincerely,
Daniel
