Are Test Scores So Important?
学习成绩重要吗?
In a number of schools, students are promoted,retained and denied graduation based on testscores. Some people even predict that higher scoresof students today will translate into better workingperformance tomorrow. It seems that test scorescan be used as a weighing tool to judge manythings. But are they so important? I’m afraid theanswer is definitely no.
人们会根据学生的学习成绩来升学、留级或是取消毕业资格。在许多学校，许多人甚至会认为今天学习成绩好的学生就意味着好的工作表现。似乎学生成绩能够判定学生的许多事物。但是它真的有那么重要吗?我认为答案是否定的。
It is true that tests are often one requirement for admission at many schools,and whenadmission officers scratch their heads making decisions, sometimes a test score is the onlycriterion on which decisions can be made. I admit that test scores are important to somepurpose in school admission. However, they bear norelation to a person’s success or failure.
对于许多学校来说，学习成绩是升学的唯一要求，当招生老师决定招生名额时，有时，学习成绩是他们做出决定的唯一砝码。学习成绩对于升学至关重要。但是学生的成功与否与成绩没有关系。
First, some students secure high scores at the cost of extracurricular activities, socialpractice and physical exercises. They are only good at tests. Second, some students get hightest scores by cheating on exams. In this case, the scores mean to no purpose that they arebetter than those who get lower scores. Furthermore, many people who score high in tests donot necessarily do well in practical work. Job success doesn’t involve taking tests. Successfulpeople work well with groups and have other qualities such as perseverance, motivation,enthusiasm, and emotional intelligence.All in all, test scores measure only a portion ofknowledge and analytical skills but nothing at all about success or failure. In some sense testscores are important, but life means more.
首先，许多学生的好成绩是以课外活动、社会实践、体育锻炼为代价的。他们只有成绩而已。第二，许多学生的好成绩是通过作弊获得的。如果是这样的话，那么好成绩就没有了任何意义，他们与成绩差的学生没有区别。此外，成绩好的学生不一定就有实际的工作能力。工作上的成功不包括成绩的好坏。成功人士能够与团队合作，他们还有许多其他的长处，例如毅力、动力、激情、情商。总之，成绩只能衡量学生的知识和分析技能，但是却不能够说明学生的成功和失败。所以学习成绩很重要，但是还有比它更重要的东西。
