Where is the Bird
I am having my lunch in a cafeteria. The food is far from delicious. But here is still quite crowded. In fact, every place that sells food is crowded at this time. There are more than thirty thousand students in this university. Not to say there are still large amount of workers, professors and other residents. The university is just part of the district.
I try to control my speed. The cafeteria is very hot. But to protect my no-longer-strong stomach, I would rather not to eat too fast.
Suddenly something warbles. Then there is a small girl's voice.
“There is a bird! There is a bird! Where is the bird?”
It seems that everybody is interested. Almost all the people are looking around.
Within seconds, or maybe a little bit longer time, someone pick up his cell-phone and walk out of the cafeteria. Now we know what happens. There are smiles and grins. Then we continue to deal with our lunch, just like nothing has happened.
However, it seems that the girl has not understood what happened. She is still asking.
“Where is the bird?”
She is with her father, who now seems quite embarrassed.
“Well, babe, that's not a bird.”
“Why?”
I don't hear what the father says next. The little girl seems still quite confused and unsatisfied. Maybe she just wants a bird. I shake my head, continuing dealing with my lunch.
She wants to see a bird. But birds won't like this place. No trees. Just buildings and crowded human beings. Where could they settle down? I don't think they would like cages. They need home too, while most of the human cities are swallowing their home. Days before I just heard in the news that people have destroyed more than half of the virgin forest in Yunnan Province. We are taking too much from the nature. And she takes something from our lives step by step too. Fresh air, beautiful landscapes, clean water, and other once-familiar things, they are becoming harder and harder to acquire, and more and more expensive. It seems that it is ourselves who make our own lives harder. How ironic! People are thinking of profits while doing this.
