a wagoner was driving his team when the wheel of his wagon got stuck in the mire. he called upon hercules for assistance, and the god at length appeared. "put your shoulder to the wheel," the god told him, "and goad on your horses. if you won't help yourself, you can't expect others to come to your help."
马车夫策马路上，车轮忽然陷入泥泞，动弹不得。他祈求赫克力士援手，最后，这位天神出现了，对他说：「你用肩膀托住车轮，驱马前行吧。你不帮助自己，就不要指望他人相助。」
【解说】这是古希腊作家伊索（aesop）的一则寓言。伊索的身世鲜为人知，《伊索寓言》却名闻天下，是不少英文成语的 来 源 。 例 如 上 文 to put one's shoulder to the wheel 一 语 ， 现 在 常 用 来 说 「 努 力 工 作 」 。 he put his shoulder to the wheel, and at length business began to pick up 即 「 他 努 力 工 作 ， 生 意 终 于 好 起 来 」 。 at length 二 字 合 用 ， 解 作 「 终 于 」 。
赫 克 力 士 是 希 腊 神 话 着 名 的 英 雄 。 这 位 天 帝 之 子 力 大 无 穷 ， 曾 奉 命 格 杀 巨 狮 怪 鸟 等 等 ， 所 以 ， 说 力 大 无 穷 或 任 务 艰 难 ， 英 文 常 用 herculean 一 字 ， 例 如 ： it is a herculean task to rebuild the town after the great earthquake （ 大 地 震 之 后 ， 要 重 建 这 个 城 市 ， 工 作 非 常 吃 力 ） 。
goad 是 用 来 驱 赶 牲 口 的 尖 棒 ， 作 动 词 ， 常 指 「 激 励 」 或 「 煽 动 」 ， 例 如 ： they goaded the workers into starting a strike （ 他 们 煽 动 工 人 罢 工 ） 。
