A Vow
Once a lion killed the father of Kalua Bhil and climbed on to a hillock, dragging the corpse along with it. Kalua took a vow to kill the lion and hid himself on the bank of the river with bow and arrow. Kalua did not allow any animal to drink water from the river. The lion came to know about the intention of Kalua Bhil and so he did not come out of his cave. The sun was about to set. A fox came to Kalua Bhil and asked, “Bhil brother, why are you so annoyed today? Let me know. May I extend you some help?” The Bhil, “The lion has killed my brother. I will not spare him. I shall not touch food as long as I have not killed the lion.”
Said the fox, “It is very difficult to kill the lion. He has hidden himself in the cave. But I shall try to tempt the lion to come to the river so that you may kill him. But let me first know what reward you will give me for this helpful act of mine”。
The Bhil promised, “Daily I shall offer you fresh and sweet berries”。 The deal was struck. The fox reached the lion and spoke to him “Lord, you are the king of the jungle. It is not proper to be afraid of a Bhil who is blind. You can accompany me and see for yourself. He is defaming you in the forest.”
The lion got very much annoyed with the Bhil and went out along with the fox to teach him a lesson. Kalua Bhil saw the lion from a distance and threw a poisonous arrow at him. The arrow pierced into the lion's heart. He roared fiercely and dropped dead.
It is said that very day the Bhils and foxes have been close friends and Bhils believe that it is a sin to kill a fox.
