The skunk is famous for its smelly spray, but it doesn't like to squirt people if it doesn't have to. It's actually scared of animals bigger than itself and only sprays when it gets upset. The skunk helps farmers by eating the rodents that chew on their crops.
· I live in the United States, Mexico, parts of Central America and southern Canada.
· I can live almost anywhere it's not too cold, but I like wooded areas the best.
· I make my home in a den, or burrow, which is a hole in the ground lined with leaves. I also may take shelter in a tree.
· I have got a long body, a narrow little head, lots of fur and a big, bushy tail.
· I'm always black with white stripes or spots.
· My body gets to be only about a foot long (about 30 centimeters), but my bushy tail might make me look a lot bigger!
· I normally weigh just 2 or 3 pounds (about one kilogram).
· I eat plants, insects, bird eggs and small animals, like mice. For a treat, I like to feast on wild honey and bees.
· I stand on my front feet and do a handstand to warn my enemies. If they get too close, I might squirt them with a bad-smelling spray. I also can growl or screech.
· People sometimes think I like to cause trouble, but I'm actually peaceful and shy. I come out of my burrow only at night to find food.
