Dandy Changes his Mind
Dandy the dog and Dinkie the cat were great friends. They romped together in the day and shared the same cosy basket at night.
“Come on, Dinkie,” cried Dandy one fine morning. “It is just the day for a swim.”
“No, I don't want to go swimming today,” said Dinkie.
When Dandy came back he searched for her, but she didn't appear until tea time, and that night she didn't share the sleeping basket.
“Are you very cross with me, Dinkie?” he asked one evening.
“No, not very,” she said, then turned back. “You can come with me if you like. I have something to show you.”
Dandy followed her up the attic steps, and there, on the heap of blankets, were two little squirming bundles of black fur.
“What are they-mice?” he gasped.
“No, indeed, they are my babies!” cried Dinkie. “They are lovely!”
“I don't think they are,” grunted Dandy, and dashed downstairs.
One day Dandy was coming back from his swim, when he was surprised to see a little black bundle of fluff rolling over and over down the steep slope of the pond. It fell into the water with a soft splash.
“That must be one of Dinkie's funny little babies,' he cried. ”I wonder if it can swim?“
He dashed back and paddled quickly towards the struggling kitten. Seizing it in his mouth, he swam back and rushed up the slope with it.
When Dinkie came in search of her runaway baby, she found Dandy drying it with his warm tongue.
Dandy has made up his mind to help Dinkie with her babies, but no matter how hard the tries they simply will not learn to swim.
