英文标识笑话百出
这边“××路”译成“××LU”,那边“××路”译成“××ROAD”,混乱的英文标识经常令老外“蒙查查”。
记者昨日从广州市质监局获悉,广东首部《公共场所双语标识英文译法规范》(征求意见稿)即将出台,并于7月起实施,路名地名今后将有地道统一的英文名字。如厕所不再叫“W.C”,统一译为“Toilet”。
英文标识笑话百出
广州的英语标识混乱,为人诟病已久。广州市质监局介绍,广东省目前尚未有全省统一的公共场所标志英文译法。目前不少公共场所双语标识的译法存在问题,有些英文译法与中文原意相去甚远。“中式英语标牌”、简单语法的错误,会让国际游客感到困惑,损害广东现代、开放的国际形象。
有关人士介绍,广州大部分的英语标识主要存在两个问题:一是英语用词不合适,前后不一致;二是很多英语标识仍然用的是“汉字打造法”,白云国际机场此前就被媒体曝光出英文标识的问题,如这边的“停车楼”被翻译为“parkinggarage”,而就在相隔不到20米的另一指示牌上,同样是“停车楼”,却被翻译为“carparkbuilding”。在机场出发大厅,“前行30米”的标识直接翻译成了“Goahead30m”,按惯用方法,ahead后面不会跟名词,令外国乘客十分别扭,甚至有点搞笑,其实最简单而直接的表述应该是“30mahead”。
“W.C”含义粗俗
该规范规定,厕所、洗手间和卫生间统一译为“Toilet”,涉及性别时,男厕译为“Gents/Men”;女厕译为“Ladies/Women”。原本市民熟悉的公厕代名词“W.C”将被彻底取缔。
有关人士介绍,“W.C”词义本身与“Toilet”区别不大,但是从修辞上说,前者给人的印象粗俗简陋、不太卫生,后者文雅。“WC”是“Water-Closet”(冲水水箱)缩写,现在很多西方国家根本不用“W.C”表示厕所,英语里,“W.C”内涵可以理解为中国话所说的茅坑。
此外,该规范规定,饭店、餐馆全部译为“Restaurant”,而专门供人喝酒、小憩的酒馆、酒店则译为“Wineshop”。
