during the second anglo-dutch war, which was caused by england's desire to end the dutch domination of world trade, a dutch fleet attacked chatham in 1667. when the fleet was approaching, the duke of albemarle, commander-in-chief of the english fleet, was apprehensive that the dutch would land, and he exposed himself to the hottest of their fire. someone tried to persuade him to retire. he answered very coolly,"sir, if i had been afraid of bullets, i would have quitted this trade of a soldier long ago."
