Lost in the Wood
There was once a clever little dog called Spot. He had learned to do all kinds of tricks.
One afternoon Betty and Jane decided to go into the woods to have a picnic.
"We must bring Spot," said Betty.
Spot, who loved carrying things, was given a small parcel. There were dog biscuits in it-for his tea. The girls carried a basket full of food.
"You must keep to the parts of the wood that you know," their Mother warned them.
They played several games, and Spot joined in the fun.
"Now we'll gather some flowers," they said, when tea was over.
At last it began to grow dark.
They picked up the basket.
"Oh dear," cried Jane, "we have wandered into a strange part of the wood. Which is our way home?"
They tried one way, then another, but couldn't find the right path.
"Can you show us the way?" Jane asked Spot.
Spot wagged his tail. He didn't understand that they were lost.
"I have an idea," said Betty. "I think Spot can help us."
She took a piece of string out of her pocket and fastened it to his collar. At the bottom of the basket was an old newspaper. She folded it up and gave it to Spot.
"Take this to Daddy," she whispered.
Spot knew that papers always had to be taken to Daddy, because he collected them every morning from the paper shop. He began to sniff along the ground.
At last he found what he was looking for. He called it "The smell that leads to home."
On and on he trotted with Betty's hand.
Spot led them towards the part of the wood that they knew, and soon they were safe home again!
