The Three Brahmans

阅读 :

Vetaal started telling the story to pass the time……

Long time age, there lived a Brahman Known as Agniswami in Brahamsthala which was situated on the bank of River Yamuna. Agniswami had a very beautiful daughter named Mandravati.

When Mandravati grew up, then one day three Brahmans from Kanyakubja visited Angiswami and each demanded Mandravati for himself. Each Brahman also said that if he could not get Mandravati, he will sacrifice his life.

But Agniswami father of Mandravati, decided not to give his daughter to any one of them. He was really afraid that if he did so with one, it will cause the death of others. And so Mandravati, remained unmarried.

The three Brahmans were still there all the day and night and were waiting for the favourable reply from Agniswami. Their eyes were on beautiful Mandravati. After sometime, Mandravati suddenly died of high fever. The three young Brahmans were shocked to know this. They carried her dead body to the cemetery and burnt her.

Out of those three Brahmans, one of them built a hut in the cemetery and made her ashes his bed. He also remained there and lived on the eatables he could get by begging.

Second Brahman took her bones and went to river Ganges with them.

The third Brahman became an hermit like and went on travelling the world.

While travelling, the third Brahman reached Vajraloka, a village and there he entered in a house of Brahman, where he was greeted very respectfully. He was offered food and sat down to eat it but suddenly at the same time, he heard the cry of a child. Inspite of all efforts, the cry of the child would not stop. The mother of the child got too much angry and threw him in the blazing fire and in no time, the body of the child was reduced to ashes.

When the ascetic Brahman who was eating food, saw this, his hairs stood and he exclaimed: “Alas…… it is very bad that I have entered in the house of a demon and not a Brahman. Now I will not eat the food given to me. It will be a sin to eat such food.

As soon as he said this and tired to go away from there, the house owner stopped him and said, “Now you see the power of raising the dead to life which is inherent in one of my charm, which is effectual as soon as the charm is recited.

After this, he took his book of charms and read it. Then he threw some dust on the ashes, over which the charm had been recited. And than a great thing happened. The boy stood up alive from the ashes and he was exactly the same as he was before.

After seeing this, the mind of the ascetic Brahman was quieted and then he was able to take his food there. The house owner put the book of charms in the almirah and after taking food, went to bed at night. the ascetic brahman did the same. But when every body was sleeping Ascetic Brahman took the book from the almirah and left the house to fulfil his desire of restoring his beloved to life.

The ascetic Brahman left that house with the book and travelled day and night. At last he reached the cemetery in which his beloved was burnt.

Suddenly he saw the second Brahman arriving there. He was the same Brahman who went to throw her bones in the river Ganga. The third Brahman was also there who remained in the cemetery and was sleeping on the ashes after having built a hut on them.

Now, the ascetic Brahman told him to remove the hut so that I may recite the charm from the book.

And after this he overturned the hut and ascetic Brahman opened the book and read the charm. he threw some dust on the ashes and after sometime Mandravati rose up alive. All the three Brahmans saw her alive again and became too much happy. After seeing Mandravati alive, they became love sick and quarrelled with one another. Each of them was desiring Mandravati for himself.

The first Brahman said that she is his wife because she was won by the power of my charm. the second said that she is his wife because she was produced by efficiency of the sacred bath in Ganga. And the third said that she is his wife because he preserved her ashes and resuscitated her by his asceticism.

“Now, the King, you have to decide their dispute. Give your judgement and decide whose wife she will be? If you know and say no to it, your head will be in pieces.”

King heard this from Vetaal, then he said to him, “Listen carefully, the one who brought her alive by the charm must be considered as her father because he performed that part for her and not her husband. The Brahman who took her bones to river Ganga may be considered as her son. But there is third Brahman  who lay on her ashes and remained in the cemetery, where he was also practicing his asceticism, is to be called her husband because he has done everything in his deep affection.

And when Vetaal listened this from the King Trivikramsen, he left his shoulders and said “You promised not to speak but you have broken your promise and here I leave.” And Vetaal went back to his place.
