The Rainbow's Pot of Gold
Little Linda was looking out of the window after a spring shower and remained dumbfounded on watching the beautiful colors of the rainbow.
“Mummy,” said the little girl, “I've heard that when a rainbow appears in heaven, there falls to earth a pot of gold and only a child born on Sunday is able to find it. It is true? And who are the children born on Sunday to whom they are reserved?
Her mother replied: “There is no doubt that there exists a heavenly treasure, and all the gold in the world is nothing in comparison to it, but children do not have to be born on Sunday to possess this treasure. The important thing is that they be better than average. They must always be on their best behaviour as if they were at Mass on Sunday. If you become such a child you will certainly obtain this treasure.”
Linda proposed to be good and holy and as she became better and holier she became also always more happy and content. When the rainbow appeared again in the sky, Linda's mother said to her:
“Linda, are you going to go and find that golden jewel of heaven?”
“Oh, dear mummy,” replied Linda, “how stupid I have been, but now I understand what you meant. You meant a gift that was more noble and precious than gold.”
“Why, certainly, my darling,” replied the mother. “That heavenly treasure which I mentioned and which is greater than all earthly treasures, is the true happiness of men which we look for in vain in the world; we can find it only in ourselves, inn a good, pure, and holy heart.”
