The Joy Of Giving
Long ago a King went out to meet his people during Dussehra (Indian Festival)。 Many poor people lined up along the road hoping to get food and gifts from him. In one of the streets a begger said to himself, “Today I shall get plenty of food. And if I happened to be near King I may even get some gold. Then I need not beg for my living.” The begger waited anxiously for the King.
After some time, the King arrived on an elephant.
Everybody in the crowd pushed forward to see their King. The beggar too came forward with his bowl. There was a handful of rice in it.
“My bowl, my bowl!” cried the beggar to attract the attention of the King. “My bowl. Give me some alms.”
The King looked at him with compassion. Then he said, “Give me something, first.”
The beggar felt annoyed. He threw a single grain of rice at the King in disgust. The King in return threw something in the beggar's bowl and rode away. The beggar grabbed it. It was a piece of gold as big as a single grain of rice.
“I am a fool,” cried the beggar. “Why did I not give all my rice?”
Giving does not mean only giving money and clothes and food. You can give love to someone who needs love. You can also give by helping others.
