Stumpy's Tail
He was a little rough-haired terrier with a short， stumpy tail， called Stumpy.
As he was trotting along the road one day he met a large dog with a lovely fluffy tail.
“Hello！” barked Stumpy. “What a fine tail you have！”
“Yes， I have！” replied the other dog. “I expect you wish you had one like me！ I wouldn't like to have your tail！”
This made poor Stumpy feel very unhappy. He had not worried about his tail before.
Then he thought of something that made him feel happier. Perhaps the fox would let him have a tiny piece of his tail！
So he waited until it was dark， then trotted quietly across to the field.
But just as Stumpy got to the fence he saw the naughty fox creep through it and slink towards his master's chicken-run. All the hens started clucking.
Their master had forgotten to shut them up for the night！
That was enough for the little dog. He gave a low growl， and darted forward.
The noise awoke Stumpy's master， who came running out to see what was the matter.
What a sight met his eyes！
There was Stumpy， hanging on to the fox's tail and dashing round and round the chicken-run， with the fox in front of him， and the chickens in front of the fox.
At the sight of the man the fox gave a hard pull， freed himself and with a mighty leap， cleared the wire fence and raced away.
But， he left the tip of his tail in Stumpy's teeth， much to the little dog's delight.
“Good old Stumpy！” his master said， giving him a pat as he let him out of the run. “No I don't want that thing！” he added as Stumpy laid his prize at the man's feet. “I prefer this tail！” And he gave Stumpy's tail a playful pull.
And now Stumpy is not ashamed of his tail any longer， but wags it proudly！
