Poor Little Nobody
On a large lake, overhung with trees, lived a little brown duck. He was very friendly, but few people took any notice of him.
The poor little duck felt very sad - but the swans would always say: “The visitors all come to see us. You are only an ordinary duck - a nobody!”
One day two men in uniform arrived in a blue van. They came to the edge of the lake, and one of them said: “I think the little brown one over there would be just right, don't you?” After a great deal of trouble the little brown one over there would be just right, don't you?“ After a great deal of trouble the little brown duck was caught.
After a while the van stopped outside a very large house indeed. They drove in through some wide gates, then the little duck was carried to a small lake in a most beautiful garden. The other ducks there made him welcome.
Next morning, as the ducks were swimming about in the bright sunshine, a lady in a pretty blue dress, and two small children, came down to the lake.
“Oh, look!” said one little boy. “There is the new duck. I like him best of all.”
“Yes,” said the lady, “isn't he nice - throw him a few crumbs, dears.”
“Come along, now children,” said the lady - and as they were leaving she turned to a gardener and said, “Good morning.” He bowed low and said, “Good morning, Your Majesty.”
The little duck nearly stopped swimming! Then he cried out: “Why, I belong to the Queen! I am a Royal duck now, and I shall never be a nobody again!”
