Ham finds a Friend
One afternoon, little Ham sat on a bank in a field, nibbling a green shoot. Ham was a little brown vole with a white chest.
Suddenly, he stopped eating. “I wish I had a friend,” he thought. So he ran along by the hedge till he found some baby rabbits playing.
“Come and play 'chase' with us!” they said.
Ham joined in at once, but they were too big and rough for him. “I'll look for a friend somewhere else,” he thought.
Presently, he came to another bank. He peeped over the edge.
Out popped a little brown head from the reeds.
“What's your name?”
“Mine's Pip, and I'm a water vole.”
“I'm looking for a friend,” said Ham.
“So am I,” said Pip with a smile.
“Let's play together!” they cried. So they did.
“Watch me!” shouted Pip. He jumped and then-PLOP! SPLASH!-he dived head-first into the river.
Ham laughed and clapped his paws.
“Can you do anything as good as that?” asked Pip.
“Why, of course,” answered Ham. “Watch me!” At once he stood on his hind legs and boxed the air with his front paws!
Pip laughed so much that he rolled on the grass and kicked about with delight.
At teat time, they found some green juicy shoots and sat down by the river to eat them. Pip noticed a pink glow in the sky.
“It's nearly sunset. We must go home.”
Ham nodded, and they agreed to meet the next day by the river.
Then Pip popped into his hole by the river, and Ham ran to his home across the field as the sun went down over the hill.
