Freddie's Cap
Gertie and her baby Freddie were giraffes who lived in a zoo. Every morning Gertie took Freddie to stand by the bars of their cage and there they would watch all that happened outside.
One day， Gertie and Freddie were watching all that went on， and even laughing at some of the funny people who were looking at them. As they watched， Gertie saw a man with a lot of little boys， all coming towards her cage.
The man was a teacher， and the little boys went to his school， but Gertie did not know that. All that Gertie knew was that the boys all wore red caps. She thought that， in all her life， she had never seen anything so smart， and more than anything she wanted a cap for Freddie.
I expect you know that giraffes have very long necks. Gertie had a very long neck， and it was useful to her now.
She waited until the boys were right outside her cage， and while the teacher was telling them about giraffes， she suddenly thrust her head through the bars and seized one boy's red cap in her teeth. Putting her head back into the cage， Gertie dropped the cap on to Freddie's little head， right between his horns.
Then， what a commotion there was！ The boy who had lost his cap cried， the other boys shouted with laughter， and the teacher called for the keeper， who soon came running to see what was the matter.
The keeper tried to get the cap， but Gertie wouldn't let him have it， so in the end the zoo people had to buy a new one. This pleased the little boy as his old cap was getting rather small for him.
As for Freddie， he still wears the red cap， and he is the only giraffe in the world who has one.
