the outset of world war i saw german forces driving relentlessly for paris. french troops, making a last-ditch stand at the river marne, were in desperate need of reinforcements. there were 6,000 soldiers in paris, but no way to get them to the marne.
then one of the generals had an idea: they could mobilise the taxicabs of paris. the call went out to the drivers, who answered with a vengeance. all over paris cabbies dumped their passengers, and explained proudly that they had to "go to battle". six hundred cabs lined up at the appointed hour. the drivers had to drive more than 35 miles at night with their lights off, or risk being bombed by german aircraft.
