§60 见水底金影喻
(60) seeing the shadow of gold at the bottom of a pond
昔有痴人，往大池所，见水底影，有真金像，谓呼“有金”，即入水中挠泥求觅，疲极不得。还出复坐。
once upon a time, there was a man who went to a large pond where he thought he had seen the shadow of pure gold at the bottom of water. he gave a cry of joy and jumped into the water to feel about the mud and search for it. a few moments later, he began to feel very tired. he could not find any gold and he then got out of the pond.
须臾水清，又现金色，复更入里，挠泥更求，亦复不得。其父觅子，得来见子，而问子言：“汝何所作，疲困如是？”
but as soon as he was out of the water that became clear in no time, the golden shadow turned up again. then he dived once again to do more searching. still he found nothing. at this point, his father came looking for him. seeing the state he was in, his father asked, "what have you been doing to get so tired?"
子白父言：“水底有真金，我时投水，欲挠泥取，疲极不得。”
the son replied, "there is pure gold under water. i searched for it, but could find nothing."
父看水底真金之影，而知此金悉在树上，所以知之，影现水底。其父言曰：“必飞鸟衔金，著于树上。”即随父语，上树求得。
the father could also see the shadow of pure gold in the water. but he soon realized that it was in the trees. so he knew what was in the water was mere reflection. then he told his son that it was held by the bird's beak and brought it in the trees. following his father's instructions, the son immediately got the gold from the trees.
凡夫愚痴人，无智亦如是。于无我阴中，横生有我想。如彼见金影，勤苦而求觅，徒劳无所得。
so are the ignorant in the world. they hold on to tile thought of ego in the shadow of non-ego, just like the stupid man looking desperately for the gold without success.
白话：
从前有个痴人到大池边去，见水底有真金的影像，惊呼：「有金子。」就跳入水中翻泥觅求。弄得疲惫极了，却未寻得金子，便出来，坐下。须臾之间，水清了，又现出金子的色泽来，他就再跳进去翻泥觅求，还是不得。父亲来找儿子了，见他这番模样，便问：「你在做什么，这般疲困?」儿子道：「水底有真金，我时时跳下去，想翻泥觅取，疲累极了，却不得。」父亲看了水底真金的影子，就知道金在树上。所以能够知道，是因为影子显现于水底。父亲说道：「必定是飞鸟衔来放在树上的。」儿子就按父亲的话，上树觅到了金子。
世上的愚痴人，也像这样不具有智慧。
在无我的五阴身中，横空产生有我的念头来。
就如那位见了金影的人，勤勤苦苦地求觅，
却徒劳而一无所得。

从前，有位年轻人和他的父亲出外，发现远处有个大池塘。
「我想要去游水，爸爸要跟我去吗？」
「你先去，我随后就到。」
年轻的儿子，独自来到了池边，他见到一池澄澈的水，心情欢喜无比。突然间，他发现水底有样东西，是一条辉煌灿烂的金链，这使他极其兴奋不已。
「我要下去把金链拿上来。」刚说完这话，他便迫不急待地扑通一声跳下水去。但他在池中东摸西找，把水底的泥都翻遍了，清澈的水都弄混了，还是没有找到那条金链，直到疲倦不堪了，才失望地爬上岸。在岸上他坐着看池里金链的地方，自言自语地说：
「奇怪呀！明明看到金链在池边的水底，为什为就是找不到呢？」
他休息了一会，池水又慢慢地澄澈了，而金链又出现在水底。他低低地警告自己说：
「这次可看准了金链的地方，下水时务必要对准金链的地方下去。」
他这次比第一次更小心谨慎，在水里轻轻地游动，不让池水混浊，他移身到看见金链的位置，小心地俯身捞取。可是就在他伸出手时，却只摸到水底的泥土，试了又试，直到自己疲累不已，还是没有摸到水底的金链。不禁自言自语地说：
「奇怪呀，为什么捞不到呢？」他无可奈何地只好上岸，坐在树下休息，想不透怎么回事。父亲这时对儿子不放心，走到池边来。看到儿子坐在树下，面对澄清的池水发呆，很疲倦的样子。他走近儿子的身边，关怀地问道：
「你怎么累成这个样子？」
「爸爸你看！」儿子用手指着池边水底说：「那不是一条金链吗？」
「是啊！」父亲在这一剎那，所见与儿子一样，所以他如此回答。
「我为了捞取水底金链，弄得一身疲劳。」儿子怀疑地告诉爸爸说，「为什么当我下去捞取的时候，偏偏又不见了，这不是很奇怪吗？」
父亲听完了儿子的话，定神看了半天，发现水底之物乃是金链的影子，便喜悦地告诉儿子说：
「真正的金链是挂在树上，水里只是树上金链的倒影呀，你在水底又怎能捞到呢？」
「金链怎么会在树上？不是明明白白在水底吗？」儿子还是不明白地问。
「你若不信，现在你放弃看水底的金链，抬起头来看看树上吧！」
