A Change for Charlie
Charlie Caterpillar sat on a cabbage leaf, looking very sad.
“What is the matter, Charlie?” asked Danny Dormouse, as he swung on a grass stalk.
“I am worried!” said Charlie. “A lovely butterfly has laid all her eggs on my cabbage and gone away, leaving me to feed and look after all her children for her when they hatch out. And how I am to get pollen and honey for the poor little things I do not know. I only eat cabbage myself, and that will not do for baby butterflies.”
But Danny only laughed.
“You are a silly Billy!” he said. “Why! The Butterfly's children won't be baby butterflies at all, they will be caterpillars. They will not eat honey, they will eat cabbage. And you will change into a butterfly yourself one day!”
By-and-by he heard a munching sound. And Charlie saw that the cabbage leaf was covered with tiny caterpillars, all eating as fast as they could.
Charlie could hardly believe his eyes.
“They are caterpillars!” he cried. “And they are eating cabbage! Then what the Dormouse said was true. Perhaps I shall be a butterfly one day, after all!” And he was so happy and so tired the fell fast asleep.
When he woke up he felt that he must stretch himself. His coat felt so tight. Suddenly, his coat split and Charlie crawled out of his old coat. He had a pair of wings on his back which quickly dried in the sun. He was a splendid yellow butterfly!
Just then Mrs Bumble Bee flew by.
“My word!” she said. “Who are you?”
So Charlie told her all about how he was Charlie changed into a butterfly.
And then he flew away with Mrs Bumble Bee, and she showed him how to find all the best honey in the garden.
