Tiny Grey Mouse and the Tunnel
Tiny Grey Mouse lived in a tiny hole in Miss Wilkins' dining-room and after Miss Wilkins had left for her office, he would come into the dining-room and look for any crumbs that she might have dropped.
But this morning Tiny Grey Mouse was not feeling hungry, as last night he had been to Tilly the Hen's birthday party and had eaten lots of cake, and was still full up, so he decided to explore the tunnel behind the fireplace. It looked very dark and he felt a bit frightened because he had often heard noises coming from it. He took his torch out of his trouser pocket, switched it on and marched very bravely down the tunnel.
Some minutes later, Tiny Grey Mouse suddenly saw something that made him feel very frightened. At first he thought it was an eye, then he looked again and saw it was a light coming nearer and nearer. He wanted to turn around and run away, and just as he had made up his mind a small voice called out: “Who, er, er - Wh-who is th-there?”
“It's T-t-t-tiny Gr-rey M-m-m-mouse.”
“Whew!” There was a very loud sigh. “Whew! My name is Willie, an I'm a brown dormouse.”
“Thank goodness,” said Tiny Grey Mouse. “You certainly gave me a surprise.”
“Well, you surprised me too,” said Willie. “I live here. Would you like to have some tea with me? All this excitement makes me very thirsty.”
“Yes, me too. Thank you very much. I am glad to know I've got a nice friendly neighbour. I do hope we can become friends.”
And, of course, they did.
