The Turnip
A poor working man had a turnip in his garden that was the wonder of everyone.
“I shall make a gift of it to our noble lord,” he said, “because I know that it pleases him when he sees that the land is being tilled.”
He brought the turnip to the castle and the nobleman was very pleased at the hard work that the gardener had done to grow such a beautiful Vegetable and he gave him three pieces of gold.
A ploughman who was very rich, but miserly, heard about the fact and said: “I shall immediately offer my biggest calf to our noble lord. If one can receive three pieces of gold for a mere turnip, I should receive a handsome reward for myself.”
He put a halter on the neck of the calf and on they went to the castle and there the man asked that the calf be given to the lord as a gift. The latter, realizing the motive that lay behind such an offer, told him plainly that he did not want the gift.
But the ploughman insisted and asked the owner of the castle not to despise his gift. The cunning lord said to him: “Very well, since you leave me no choice and as you have shown yourself to be so generous, I certainly don't wish to be outdone in generosity. I wish to exchange your gift with another which cost me three pieces of gold, the price that is worth your calf.” Without further word, the nobleman gave to the very surprised and shocked ploughman the wonderful, big turnip that he knew about so well.
