The Mangoes
Judith was a lucky child of very rich parents and she had a very beautiful room， in which， unfortunately， everything was in disorder. She never worried about looking after it and vain were the warnings of her mother to keep her room in order.
One Sunday afternoon she had just finished dressing and was preparing to go out with her mother when the neighbour's daughter brought her basketful of beautiful mangoes. As there was no room on the table or the window sill because Judith had thrown some of her things there， she placed the basket of mangoes on a chair which was finished in blue silk. Then she left with her mother for the nearby town.
They returned home later when it was already dark and Judith was so tired that she went immediately to her room and sat down in the first chair she found. But she had hardly sat down when she jumped to her feet， crying out in fright. She had sat on the basket of mangoes.
Hearing that sought of fright her mother ran to her room with a light in her hand. What did she see？ The mangoes were all squashed and the juice ran down from the sides of the chair. Judith's dress was ruined and it could never be used again.
Seeing this her mother spoke to Judith sternly： “Perhaps you will now realize how necessary it is to keep your room in order. This is a punishment for your disobedience and your bad habit of disorderliness.”
