The Ears of Corn

One day a farmer went into the fields with his son to see if the corn was ripe.
“Dad,” asked the boy Tony, “how is it that some stalks are bent over and almost touch the ground, while others are always erect? The straight ones must certainly be the better ones. And the bending stalks must be the bad ones!”
His father took a few stalks in his hand and said: “Look here, this stalk which is bent over in modesty, has the best grain, while this other stalk which carries its head so proudly in the air has no grains.”
