The Echo
Little George as yet did not know what an echo was. One day when he was in the fields he began to call out: “Oh, oh!” Immediately from a nearby woods a voice repeated: “Oh, oh!” Hearing this, little George asked in surprise: “Who are you?” And the voice again: “Who are you?” He cried out again: “You are an egghead!” “Egghead!” re-echoed the voice from the woods.
George became annoyed and angry. His words to the unknown voice became more offensive, but every word came back to him as faithfully as he produced it. so he decided to enter the woods and find the person to get even with him, but he never succeeded in finding anyone.
At last he returned home and complained to his mother that a bad boy, hidden in the woods, had insulted him.
His mother smiled and said: “This time you have accused yourself, because all you heard was the echo of your own words. If you had used nice words, the same would have come back to you. Such happens in life. The conduct of others towards us is usually only the echo of our conduct towards them. If we are courteous with us, but if we are rude, rough, and slipshod, we can expect nothing better.”
