Hodge-Podge
Once upon a time there were three hedgehogs and they lived in a field near a wood.
One day Mummy Hedgehog said to Hodge-Podge:
“This morning baby Hetty and I are going shopping.”
As soon as Mummy Hedgehog and baby Hetty had gone, Hodge-Podge went into the wood and there he met his friend.
“Hello!” said Red Squirrel. “I know a garden across the road where there is a big nut tree. Will you come with me?”
“I don't like nuts,” said Hodge-Podge.
“Oh there are sure to be beetles, too,” said Red Squirrel.
Now Hodge-Podge loved beetles so he said he would go. Red Squirrel ate lots of nuts and Hodge-Podge found some nice juicy beetles. They were having a lovely time when a big dog ran out of the house and barked at them. Red Squirrel climbed up the nut tree but as Hodge-Podge had little legs and could not climb trees, he curled up into a tight prickly ball.
“I'm coming down to help you,” said Red Squirrel. “I will make the dog chase me.”
Red Squirrel climbed very quietly down the tree, pulled the dog's tail and then ran away. The dog yelped, and when he saw Red Squirrel, ran after him. Hodge-Podge ran to the gate and across the road.
Soon Red Squirrel came jumping along.
“Well, thank you for helping me, Red Squirrel,” said Hodge-Podge. “I was so frightened. I don't think I want to go into that garden any more.”
“Neither so I,” said Red Squirrel.
“We may have beetles for dinner,” said Hodge-Podge. “I must be going now. Good-bye! I will see you again soon!”
