Hester's Harvest Adventure
Hester was a pretty little harvest mouse who lived in Farmer Brown's big cornfield.
Hester had thick soft fur, bright black eyes, a short blunt nose and rounded ears. She also had a nest of babies. Yes, in a loose ball of grass they swung between the cornstalks, right above the ground and guarded by a friendly Poppy.
Whenever Hester left home, the Poppy watched over her babies, and, should danger threaten at any time, she waved her scarlet petals as a warning.
One day, when Hester thought it was time to look for a winter home and had gone to a nearby hedge to search for a suitable hole, the Poppy started to wave her petals wildly.
Hester turned round just in time to see a great big machine thundering along, cutting down the corn and throwing it into sheaves.
With her little heart pattering, Hester ran between the stubble to try to find her home and babies.
“Oh dear! Wherever can it be?” she said, looking at the long line of sheaves lying on the ground.
It seemed an endless task but Hester set out to search every sheaf.
All at once she caught sight of a scarlet petal feebly trying to flutter under a heavy sheaf of corn. It was her friend, the Poppy!
Hester quickly ran to the sheaf and bit away the corn pressing on the Poppy. Then she gave a cry of joy, for resting against the faithful Poppy's stem was her little nest.
