Fi-Fi's Good Turn
“Goodnight， Fi-fi！” yawned Captain Cuttle， as he turned out the light.
“Yawk！” screeched Fi-fi， the parrot， who was too busy biting the catch on her cage to answer properly. All at once the cage door flew open and she was free.
Fi-fi knew the hall window was never shut， and out she hopped. Chattering happily to herself， she flew round and round in the garden and then into the woods.
Just then a large brown owl swooped down and hooted， “Too-whit！ Who are you？”
“I am Fi-fi， the parrot！” she piped.
Crowds of birds came fluttering down and a thrush asked， “Can you sing， Parrot？”
“Not very well，” said Fi-fi sadly.
“Do you know how to find worms for your supper？” chirped a starling.
“Worms？ Ugh！ Nasty things！ I only eat seed and apples，” snorted Fi-fi.
“Can you make a nest out of grass and mud？” piped a sparrow.
“I don't need to，” snapped Fi-fi. “I live in a cage that shines like gold.”
All the birds twittered with laughter.
“I can do something none of you can do，” boasted Fi-fi.
“What is that？” asked Brown Owl.
“I can talk like the humans and they understand me，” said Fi-fi， tossing her head.
Suddenly they heard men's voices and one growled roughly， “We will put up the snares here. Plenty of rabbits about.”
Then Fi-fi had an idea. She gave a loud screech like a railway engine and cried “Rascals！ Thieves！ Boys， fetch the police！”
And with frightened shouts the men ran away and never troubled the woodland folk again.
“Hurrah！ Clever Fi-fi！” chirped all the birds， as they gathered round the parrot. “You have saved us！ Please stay with us and we will build you a nest.”
