Bertie and Bertha Beetle's Picnic
Bertie and Bertha were two little brown beetles. One fine day, Mrs Beetle said to them, “Come along, children. We are all going for a picnic in Mint Wood.”
When they arrived Mr Beetle settled himself against a tree, put on his spectacles and unfolded his newspaper. Mrs Beetle sat down beside him with her knitting, and soon they fell asleep.
Bertie and Bertha decided it would be fun to go further into the wood, to see what it was like, so they crept away on tiptoe. . . It was very quit and dark in the wood, and soon little Bertha said: “I'm afraid-let's go back.” Just then they heard a rustling sound and saw in front of them a large black creature with two shining eyes.
Bertie and Bertha trembled with fright-then they held hands and ran away as quickly as they possibly could. At the edge of the wood, they dumped into their mother and father.
The two frightened little beetles told them about the monster they had seen. Mr Beetle was very angry indeed. “That was Freddy Frog. You were lucky to escape because he eats little beetles for all his meals, and we might never have seen you again.”
“I think we had better go home,” said Mrs Beetle. “But what about tea, I'm hungry,” cried Bertie. “You'll have to wait,” said his father. “If you had both behaved, this would never have happened.” Bertie and Bertha, by this time, were very hungry and sorry for what they had done-so they decided never to disobey their parents again.
