混淆的词或概念闹大笑话
转自:zt刚来澳洲时，学习英文，经常因为混淆的词或概念闹大笑话，下面是亲身经历的几例:
一、chicken与kitchen友人在某餐馆做厨房下手，被洋朋友问及其工作时，答曰:“chicken hand”（鸡手），弄得洋朋友莫名其妙，比划了半天才明白是“kitchen hand”。'
二、pressure和pleasure语言学校某教师即将离任，我先生紧紧握着他的手，告别兼致谢:“It's a great pressure to have met you.”他想表达的是:“与您相识，深感荣幸。”一字之差却变成了:“与您相识，深感压抑”。
三、potato还是tomato先生为顾客做汉堡包，末了问道:“Would you like some potato sauce？”（您要些土豆酱吗？）顾客支吾了半天才说:“不要，谢谢。我倒是想要些番茄酱。”
四、potty和kettle邻居来家小坐，我先问她要茶还是咖啡，然后准备去烧水。恍惚记得potty是一种盛水的容器，就对她说:“I just get the potty ready for you.”（我的意思是去给她准备水壶）谁知她竟愣在那里了。一会儿，电水壶叫起来，她才恍然大悟，一脸释然:“Do you mean kettle？”（你说的是水壶啊？）原来potty是尿盆。
