Kit the Otter's Escape
Kit was little otter. He had dark brown fur and a creamy white chest.
Father Otter taught Kit to swim, and dive, and catch fish.
One morning, when Kit was swimming by himself, he caught a fish. Because it was the first fish he had caught without help he didn't want to share it with his sister. So he searched for a secret place to eat his catch.
Suddenly Kit saw just the right spot-a hole under the water, just like his home. It was a narrow metal pipe that had been thrown into the river.
A few mornings later Mother Otter, Kit and his sister heard Father Otter give three strange whistles from the river.
“Keep still,” hissed Mother Otter.
“A single whistle is the 'All Clear' signal,” explained Mother Otter. “Three whistles mean danger.”
“I will save Father,” exclaimed Kit, and he swam outside.
It was then that the otter-dogs and the huntsmen saw him. Kit saw them too, and dived. The dogs came splashing into the water after him. Poor Kit knew he couldn't swim home. Then he remembered his secret place. It was round a bend in the river. The bend hid him from the dogs and the huntsmen. Kit swam into the secret place, and crawled in as far as he could.
And there he stayed until at last he heard Father Otter's 'All Clear' whistle.
