Crocodile's Revenge
Once upon a time, there lived a brown fox with a sharp nose and big yellow teeth. He was lean and thin for he had had no food for days. But being very clever, he eventually thought of a plan.
The next day he opened a school right in the middle of the woods. He put up a big board declaring that admissions were open for young animals. As the news got around, all the animals became eager to get their young ones educated and sent them to fox's school. Happy with his new students, the fox settled down to teach.
Now, deep in the woods, there flowed a river. A crocodile lived here with his seven children. Not wanting to be left out, he took his children to the school. The fox's mouth watered when he saw the fat crocodile kids for there was nothing he loved more than some juicy and tender crocodile flesh.
So assuring the crocodile about his children's prospects he said, “Sir, come back after seven days. By then your seven children will be highly educated and ready to make a mark on the world.”
The crocodile went back to the river. Little did he know that no sooner had he turned his back that the fox gobbled up one of the young ones. Each day after that he dined on one more crocodile kid till only one was left.
On the seventh day, the crocodile came to fox's school full of great expectations. The wicked fox at once assumed a very humble look and said, “Revered Sir, if you could please wait one more day, your children's education will be complete.”
The crocodile decided that one more day would not make a difference. However, he asked, “May I see my children once? I have not seen them for seven days and am feeling sad.”
The fox was in a fix. He had only one child left. But without batting an eyelid, he said, “But of course. Please wait here.”
Quickly he went into the school and brought out the one crocodile kid.
“One”, he said.
He took the kid back in and brought him back again.
“Two”, he said.
Again he took the kid inside and brought him back saying, “Three”。
In this way, he brought the kid seven times before the crocodile. The foolish crocodile thought his children were safe and returned home humming a tune.
Meanwhile the fox ate up the remaining kid, dispersed the school and fled into his lair. Next day, the crocodile came to the school but all he found were some broken pieces of furniture and a pile of bones. At once, he realized what the fox had done. Full of fury, he decided to teach the fox a lesson.
The crocodile went to the river bank and lay hidden in the dark mud. For days, the fox hid in the lair. But he again became weak and thin. He was also filled with a longing for some tender, tasty crabs. So he tiptoed to the river bank and prowled about looking for the crabs.
Unknowingly, he stepped on the crocodile's back thinking it was a log of wood. No sooner did he do so that the crocodile slid into the river carrying the fox with him.
The fox was now thoroughly alarmed moreover as the crocodile had managed to grasp one of his legs in hid big mouth. He thought rapidly and then called out, “Revered Sir, what you have in your mouth is not my leg. It is only a stick. See, here is my leg.” He thrust a stick at the crocodile.
The foolish crocodile once again fell for the fox's trick. He realized the leg to snap at the stick and the fox leapt into the bank. From there he ran into the forest as fast as his legs would carry him.
The crocodile was determined to punish the fox. He crawled into the wood where he lay as if deed for next three days. All the animals thought he was dead. The news reached the fox too who went to see if his foe was really dead.
On reaching, the fox called out, “The crocodile does not appear to be dead. Friends, don't you know that dead crocodiles move their tails? His tail is not moving.”
At once the crocodile began to move his tail. All the animals scattered here and there. The fox ran for his life. He began to climb up a root of the Banyan tree to avoid the crocodile who was charging behind him. When he was half way up the root, it snapped under his weight. The fox fell on his head and broke his neck.
That was end of the wicked old fox and that was who the crocodile finally had his revenge.
