在美说中式英语: "我们的浴室关了"
我们大学曾经与美国一所大学的学生联欢，大家谈笑甚欢，意犹未尽，便邀请美国学生到我们的宿舍玩。走到半路，其中一个美国女孩问，“Where is the bathroom？”我好不纳闷，她怎么会关心我们的浴室在哪儿啊？我如实指给她看。女孩接着表达想进去。我忙告诉她，“Sorry，our bathroom is closed.我们的浴室关了”这回轮到女孩纳闷地摇头。一路说笑到了宿舍，女孩又问，“where is your bathroom？”怎么又问啊？看到我一头雾水的样子，女孩说，水喝多了，想去回应“call of nature”（自然的呼唤）。我这才恍然大悟。原来她想去洗手间。事后仔细查书，bathroom不仅有浴室的意思，更多时候是指洗手间。可是，在一些简化的字典里，迄今，也只有浴室的解释。
这则还算是笑话，另一件可就没有这么幽默了。当时我和几个朋友在美国拉斯维加斯一家酒店乘电梯。梯门一开，涌进三个美国大男孩。其中一位，对着我的一个女同伴，问到“Are you working?”这个刚到美国不久的女孩回答，“Yes，but I am on holiday now.是的，不过我现在假期。”三个大男孩一脸坏笑，样子很是暧昧。搞得我们莫名其妙。同行的师姐，却脸色阴沉，一副欲说又止的样子。事后，她告诉我们，“Are you working？”在美国是一句招妓俚语。我们当时都以为他在问，“你在上班吗？”真是可恶！
外语的学习，如果剥离了文化与语境，就会力效不足，闹些笑话，出些枝杈。
