Union is Strength
One morning a flock of doves was flying in search of food. Suddenly their leader saw some white grains of rice scattered on the ground under a banyan tree. Overjoyed at their good luck, they all alighted on the ground.
But just as the hungry doves started picking the grains, they found themselves trapped in a net spread by a hunger. The next moment, they saw the hunter coming towards them. He was carrying a big club in his hand. The doves were now sure that their end was near.
The leader of the doves was very wise and brave. “Listen to me, my friends!” he said. “We are surely in deep trouble. But we need not lose hope. I have an idea. We can still get away unharmed. We shall all fly upwards together, carrying the net with us. We are small creatures. Separately we can do little. But together we can easily lift the net and fly away with it.”
The doves liked the idea. They had no choice, in fact. Immediately each one picked up a part of the net with its beak. Then they all flapped their wings and rose together high in to the air. The hunter watched helplessly as the doves made good their escape.
When they had flown a safe distance, the leader said to them, “Half our troubles are over. But we are still not out of danger. We cannot pull our feet out of the net. Let us go to my friend, the mouse, who lives in a hole at the foot of a tree nearby. He will cut the net with his sharp little teeth and set us free.”
The doves welcomed the idea and off they flew to the place where the mouse lived. “What is the matter, my friend?” the mouse enquired of the leader of the doves. “You look worried. Can I help you in any way?”
“We have been caught in this net,” said the leader.
“We have managed to fly together with this net and bring it so far. You must help us now and set us free.”
“You are most welcome,” said the mouse and soon got down to doing his job. With his sharp teeth, he cut the cords of the net to pieces. One by one, all the doves were thus set free.
The doves thanked the mouse for hid help. They were proud of their leader who had taught them how to face problems unitedly. They thanked him for saving them from an almost certain death. Then, with a song of joy in their hearts, they flew away merrily together in the free, open air.
