The Impatient Fawn
Have you ever seen a stag？ They have big branched horns called antlers-but their babies， the fawns， have none at all.
One day Ferdy ran to his mother.
“Mother，” he said. “When will my antlers grow？”
“Not this year，” replied his mother softly. “Be patient， little one， and you will have fine big antlers like your father.” Ferdy ran off again. As he bounded away he saw two rabbits behind a tree.
“I wonder what you will look like with antlers，” said Rob Rabbit.
“Oh， very handsome，” replied Ferdy.
“Are you strong enough to pull that branch out？” asked Rob. Ferdy pulled and pulled， and at last he pulled out a big forked branch.
“Bend down，” he said. “I will try to tie it on your head.
“Stand up now，” he said， and when Ferdy stood up he had antlers just like his father's. He looked at himself in the lake. Mother deer smiled. Fifi danced round him.
“How grown up you look，” she said. “But come and play.” Ferdy held his head high as he bounded off to play with Fifi. But soon the branch grew too heavy.
“Help me to get it off， please，” he said. Fifi did and then they ran back to their mother.
“I don't mind waiting for my antlers now，” said Ferdy. “I know just how handsome I will look.”
“You know too that you must be big and strong to bear them，” replied his mother.
