The Fieldmouse's Garden

阅读 :

“Oh dear, this sack is heavy,” sighted Mr Billy Fieldmouse, as he struggled home with a sack of wheat over his shoulder. Just then a big puff of wind blew Billy off his feet. “Oh!” he cried, “I've split all the wheat!”

Milly Fieldmouse and the children came running out of their burrow to see what had happened.

“I'm afraid most of it is lost in the snow,” said Billy sadly. “Now we won't have enough to last us through the winter.”

Well, all that winter they had to be very careful and only eat when they were really hungry. Cousin Jimmy, hearing of their bad luck, sent them a piece of bread, and old Martha Fieldmouse, who lived in the next burrow, sent them some dried fruit. Everyone was very kind and Mr and Mrs Fieldmouse promises they would return their kindness.

Then one spring day Milly popped up for some fresh air.

  “Billy, come quickly!” she cried.

There were tiny green shoots peeping above the ground, all round their home. Billy twirled his whiskers. “That's not ordinary grass,” he said. But then he remembered . . . “Why,” he said joyfully. “It must be wheat. Some of those grains I spilled in the snow must have taken root.”

And he was right. In the autumn, when the wheat turned a golden yellow, they harvested it. In fact, they had so much wheat that they were able to repay all the kind friends who had helped them during the last winter.
